I created this particular body of work in order to explore implications of Orientalism in the way layers of meaning in the ancient and contemporary Khmer culture can be appropriated by Western tourists and neo-colonialists such as myself.

I grew up in Southeast Asia, first explored Angkor Wat in 1957, was an Asian Studies major at Cornell, am a PhD in Sociology and have returned to the area as often as possible. More recently I have studied art history and technique at MOMA, Yale Art Galleries and fiber studies programs.

I would like to call attention to the economic and social challenges in Cambodia today, and to support NGOs working in the country. When my work is purchased, I ask that the funds go to an NGO. I have donated work to organizations for use in silent auctions and other fundraising activities, and have supported groups such as the United Cambodian Cultural Center, Friends Without A Border (Angkor Children’s Hospital) and New Hope for Cambodia.
